On Saturday February 8, we marched in the Youth and Student Contingent at the Moral March. The presence of youth and students at the march was inspiring. The contingent voiced the frustrations of our generation. NCHEAT member, Q Wideman spoke brilliantly and passionately about police brutality and education justice. UNC graduate Ivana Gonzales spoke about worker’s rights. Obviously, one theme that ran through the speeches was that of morality. However, the speakers didn’t speak of morality in a traditional ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ sense. They emphasized the role that communities must play in defining morality and justice from themselves. The Power Party and the Moral March foreshadow great things to come for Freedom Summer 2014 and North Carolina’s Youth and Student Movement.
